Entrepreneurship : It isn’t a job, it is a Mindset

- Nabonita Friday January 18, 2019

With more and more people getting terminated, fired or downsized, finding another job can get quite difficult. Have you ever thought about being self-employed? After all, being your own boss can be an exciting prospect.

So, what is the first question that comes to your mind when you think about starting your own business? “How do I start a business?” should not be the first question you should be asking if you’re in this situation. The first question you should be asking is “Should I start a business? Before you start thinking about the different types of businesses you might start, you have to do some thinking about yourself. Running a business is not everyone’s cup of tea. To be a successful entrepreneur, you must have or develop a certain personality.

If being your own boss is on your bucket list, take a look at these traits.

Creative Thinking is all an entrepreneur need

Entrepreneurs are known for thinking outside of the box. Anyone can start an online business or a storefront; it takes Jeff Bezos to conceive of Amazon.com and expand an online book-selling business to using drones, streaming media, and supplying nearly any item under the sun. Creative thinking can take a smart, capable business owner to another level of success. In cover letters and interviews, emphasize this skill to show potential employers that you see connections and possibilities where others do not.

Successful Entrepreneurs are risk takers

Launching any entrepreneurial venture is risky. Are you willing to assume that risk? A famous American author and entrepreneur, Timothy Ferriss, in his book ‘The Four-Hour Workweek’ said, “What we fear doing the most is usually what we most need to do.” Risk taking will be a part of your entrepreneurial journey. But taking risks shouldn’t scare you. Don’t be afraid to take the leap. Successful entrepreneurs take risks as opportunities.

They are in thirst of knowledge

A successful entrepreneur is in a continuous quest for knowledge. They want to know everything that has to do with how their business will work. They keep asking questions that can fuel their passion and goals. Acquiring knowledge isn’t just about being book smart, but rather have a natural inquisitiveness and curiosity. This will drive you to look at problems differently to create an unimagined solution.

They are visionary

Are you a type of a person who looks ahead and can see the big picture? Successful entrepreneurs see opportunities everywhere. They have the ability to see the future before it happens. As a founder of your company, you should be able to decide where your business should go, and this requires vision. Without vision, your ship will be lost at the ocean.

They are flexible

Entrepreneurs wear several hats. From accountants and customer service agents to marketers and project managers, they dive into all aspects of their business. So, if you decide on starting a business of your own, you will no longer have ‘one’ job with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. You will have multiple roles which will be often interrupted by unforeseen crises.

As an entrepreneur, you will need to be ready to tweak your initial plans or strategies depending upon the situation. Sometimes they may just be tweaks but most of the times it can be a drastic change. You’ll have to be willing to accommodate these changes as and when new information arrives or when there are changes in circumstances.

They have strong Work Ethic

Being an entrepreneur may seem flashy and exciting. But a lot of hard work and long hours are required to launch something new. To be successful, entrepreneurs must execute. You’ll often hear stories of entrepreneurs who begin their workday well before sunrise or send middle-of-the-night emails. Entrepreneurs are relentless when it comes to completing projects and following through on the work required to turn ideas and plans into sellable products.

They are self-motivated

Are you a kind of a person who needs a push for things to be done? If yes, then I’m sorry to shatter your dreams of becoming an entrepreneur. Entrepreneurs are dedicated to their work. They aren’t reliant on anyone to push them towards their goals or to get their work done. In many cases, for those who try to start businesses after having had a long-term job, this is one of the hardest adjustments to make.

In an entrepreneurial venture, you are in the driver’s seat. In order to succeed in your entrepreneurial journey, you must not only know how to motivate yourself but also the people around you. You must be able to keep your spirits high no matter how discouraging the situation may be.

So, are you ready to make these changes to yourself?

The point of this blog is not to scare you off, but to make you aware of how you must re-adjust your thinking to make the transition from an employee to self-employed business owner. If you are ready to go, it’s time to start preparing your business plan.
